FYI their magazine – Cook’s Illustrated – is a very unique cooking magazine.  There are no advertisements.  They test recipes, gadgets, cooking techniques and cookware.  Every recipe is an experiment.  They test every possible way to perfect a recipe and tell you all the details. Informative and helpful indeed!

Would you make 38 versions of the same dish to find the absolute best version?

We do, every day. Why? So you don’t have to.

The weekend is finally here!  Yippee! Remember to take  some time out for rest and relaxation this weekend.

Praying the Names of God – Elohim

Filed under: Bible, Bible Study, Books, Christianity, Devotional, Faith, God, Jesus, Lyrics, Music, Quotes, Reading, Worship — Lana G! @ 7:16 am

My sister Vera just purchased the book – Praying the Names of God by Ann Spangler.  I was thumbing through it and started to read some of the names of God.  I looked up at her with that look she has seen all too often that asks, “Can I take this and read it?” and she said with wisdom and love, “Get your own, that’s mine!”

Oh, she knows me so well and I love her dearly!  The following is an excerpt from the book:

Elohim is the Hebrew word for God that appears in the very first sentence of the Bible. When we pray to Elohim, we remember that He is the one who began it all, creating the heavens and the earth and separating light from darkness, water from dry land, night from day.  This ancient name of God contains the idea of God’s creative power as well as his authority and sovereignty.  Jesus used a form of the name in his agonized prayer from the cross. ”Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachtani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Elohim (e-lo-HEEM) is the plural form of El or Eloah, one of the oldest designations for divinity in the world… Elohim is used more than 2500 times.  Its plural form is used not to indicate a belief in many gods, but to emphasize the majesty of the One True God.  He is the God of gods, the highest of all.  Christians may recognize in this plural form a hint of the Trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Elohim occurs thirty-two times in the first chapter of Genesis.  After that, the name Yahweh appears as well and is often paired with Elohim.  In the NIV, the two together are translated “the Lord God”.

When I read this it reminds me that God is in control.  That “He is the one who began it all”.  I keep going back to that phrase.  He is the one who began it all.  He has it all planned out.  He knows the story from beginning to end.  “He is the one who began it all”.  God started it and He will finish it!

I don’t know about you, but that is a relief.  It reminds me to LIG- Let It Go.  I am not in control, although I find myself fighting for control more often than not!

Listen to these words by Twilla Paris in her song God is in Control

This is no time for fear
This is a time for faith and determination
Don’t lose the vision here
Carried away by emotion

Hold on to all that you hide in your heart
There is one thing that has always been true
It holds the world together

God is in control
We believe that His children will not be forsaken
God is in control
We will choose to remember and never be shaken
There is no power above or beside Him, we know
God is in control, oh God is in control

Amen? Amen!!
