May our prayers be powerful and effective Lord as we knock on your door for Heather and her family today. Amen.

Post-Op Day 1 Update

I have to apologize for not getting an update up earlier. I am very sorry, but thank you for being patient with me.

I just spoke to Mark, he was sitting down eating some dinner while Heather slept and she requested that he stay with her tonight so he will be going back to the hospital afterwards. Yes, she requested.

She has full mobility. She’s been walking around and changed from those hospital gowns to her nice, soft jammies today. She wants her hair washed. )

She’s not really talking. It’s all there in her mind, she’s just having some trouble getting it from there to her mouth. She is able to shake her head yes and no and she understands you most of the time. She’s smiling and happy… she knows when people are there. I can only imagine how frustrated she is.

She’s not really in any pain, but she was a little dizzy earlier. Mark said he thinks it’s partially due to the fact that she wasn’t drinking enough. They are getting on top of that though.

Specifics for prayer:

  • That she get some good rest.
  • That her speech comes back quickly
  • That she stays relatively pain free

Thank you sooo much for caring so deeply for Heather and her family. Thank you for those prayers and please keep them coming.

One Thing’s for Certain

I have this on going battle with trying to put God in a box.  It is a lovely package that keeps all that I don’t understand about him predictable and manageable.  But God does not like to be boxed up and refuses my false images of Him.  I must see Him as the uncontainable God that He is.  The following article from Discipleship Journal magazine was real helpful in opening my eyes to what I was doing:

One Thing’s for Certain
Celebrating the unchanging nature of Jesus

by M. Wayne Brown
Discipleship Journal Issue #143 September/October 2004

There is something about the predictable, the thoroughly knowable person or thing, that brings us comfort. Once we become oriented to who, what, where, why, and when a certain thing is, we want it set in concrete. We want to know that we can always count on it, that it “won’t ever change.” We want to be in control.

So when we read in Heb. 13:8 about Christ never changing, that He is “the same yesterday and today and forever,” we are greatly comforted. What relief to know that what we see is what we get.

But therein lies a tragic but common mistake we make regarding our view of Christ and, consequently, our faith: We assume that what we see of Christ through our finite perceptions is all there is to see. We assume that if Christ does a thing a certain way once, He will do it that same way in the future. We confuse same action with same character. In so doing, we dodge the real issue—the cultivation of an abiding trust in God—in favor of our peevish doubts about His ability or willingness to meet our expectations for the future.

The instinct to make a thing predictable, to collar it, is a difficult one to shake. It is certainly important to get our theology straight, to gain the most accurate understanding we can of who God is and how our lives in Him are to be lived. But we must not then go on to assume that in clarifying our theology, we can also put God in the box of our expectations.

…No, He’s not predictable. But He’s unfathomably, most certainly, dependable. He’s been there. He knows what He’s doing. We can count on it.

Thank you Lord that you are not predictable but you are dependable. Thank you for being my unfathomable God!
