Blue Monday-The Beachcomber   15 comments

Happy Blue Monday and Happy Valentine’s Week.  This weekend Hubby came down to California and we decided to try The Beachcomber Restaurant in Newport Beach.  We were not disappointed!  I found plenty of blue to photograph.  We ate, walked and enjoyed a beautiful day at the beach.  Winter is one of my favorite times of the year to go to the beach in southern California.  I’ll show you why…

You gotta love a restaurant that has blankets on each chair in case it gets a little chilly!  The blanket says, “Stolen from The Beachcomber”!  The food was delicious and the view – amazing.  Hubby and I decided that this will be a regular spot when we are down in California over the weekend.

So,  if you are down in southern California, head on over to The Beachcomber.  I think you might like it!

Now have a great week and for more Blue Monday posts, click on the pretty bird up above and head on over to Sally’s!

Golden Berry & Zov’s   3 comments

Hubby flew down to California and we spent the weekend relaxing and running some California errands. Last night we went to dinner with my brother-in-law and sister who graciously let me stay with them while I am in California. Nick and Vera have hearts bigger than big and we love and appreciate them very much.

We went to Zov’s Bistro.  Wonderful food and great conversation.  Gary, one of the owners, introduced us to golden berries.   This is the only thing I took a picture of at dinner!  Go figure!

C is for Catalina Island off the California Coast!

There’s even a song written about this little island…

26 Miles (Santa Catalina)

(Glen Larson and Bruce Belland)

Twenty-six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin’ for me
Santa Catalina, the island of romance
Romance, romance, romance

Water all around it everywhere
Tropical trees and the salty air
But for me the thing that’s a-waitin’ there, romance

It seems so distant, twenty-six miles away
Restin’ in the water serene
I’d work for anyone, even the Navy
Who would float me to my island dream

Twenty-six miles, so near yet far
I’d swim with just some water-wings and my guitar
I could leave the wings
But I’ll need the guitar for romance
Romance, romance, romance

Twenty-six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin’ for me
Santa Catalina, the island of romance

A tropical heaven out in the ocean
Covered with trees and girls
If I have to swim, I’ll do it forever
‘Til I’m gazin’ on those island pearls

Forty kilometers in a leaky old boat
Any old thing that’ll stay afloat
When we arrive we’ll all promote romance
Romance, romance, romance

Twenty-six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin’ for me
Santa Catalina
The island of romance
Romance, romance, romance

Twenty-six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin’ for me

Fun facts about Catalina Island

  1. It’s really only 21.8 miles from the mainland not 26
  2. More than 100 species or varieties of birds make Catalina their permanent or transitory home.
  3. Pigeons were used to carry messages between Catalina and the mainland from the 1850’s to as late as 1899.
  4. Length of island, 21 miles. Width, 8 miles at its widest point (Long Point) and 1/2 mile at Two Harbors at the Isthmus.
  5. I fly over this island two times a week on my way to and from Washington!

Here is an aerial shot I took of Catalina Island:

Typical California Jolt!   8 comments

So, I am sitting down in my room reading some blogs before I hit the sack and all of a sudden I feel a jolt and the house shakes.  Oh my word we just had an…

Did I mention that I am in Southern California and you never know when an earthquake will hit!  Just to make sure it was an earthquake and not something seriously wrong with the house’s foundation,  I went to one of my favorite sites to find out about earthquakes which is almost instant in their reporting. I wanted to find out where it was centered and what the magnitude was.  Here is their report…

A minor earthquake occurred at 9:28:49 PM (PDT) on Wednesday, March 26, 2008.
The magnitude 3.1 event occurred 3 km (2 miles) NE of Newport Beach, CA.
The hypocentral depth is 8 km ( 5 miles).

Yeah, that felt like a 3.  I am just really glad it wasn’t a really big one! Boy do they get your heart racing for a second though!  I guess it’s now safe to go to bed!
